Understanding MS rehabilitation
What is MS rehabilitation?
Multiple sclerosis is a complex neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath, the protective coating that surrounds nerve fibres, disrupting the signals sent between the brain and the rest of the body. This can cause a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, weakness, balance and coordination difficulties, spasticity and problems with walking.
MS affects everyone differently. Some people experience relapses followed by periods of recovery, while others experience a more gradual progression of symptoms over time. Because of this, MS rehabilitation needs to be flexible, responsive and tailored to the individual.
Specialist neurological physiotherapy plays an important role in helping people living with MS to manage their symptoms, maintain their function and stay as active and independent as possible. Through carefully tailored exercise and rehabilitation, physiotherapy can help to improve strength, balance, coordination and mobility, as well as supporting fatigue management and reducing the impact of MS on everyday life.
How Jo can help
Specialist MS rehabilitation tailored entirely to you
Jo has extensive experience working with people living with all types of MS, including relapsing remitting, secondary progressive and primary progressive MS. She understands the unpredictable nature of the condition and takes a flexible, responsive approach to rehabilitation that adapts to how you are feeling from session to session.
Jo takes time to truly understand each person she works with, their symptoms, their challenges and what they want to achieve from physiotherapy. She uses a range of specialist techniques including the Bobath concept to facilitate movement and improve functional outcomes, alongside targeted exercise programmes designed to build strength, improve balance and manage fatigue.
All sessions take place in the comfort of your own home across Sheffield and South Yorkshire, removing the stress and exhaustion of travelling to appointments and allowing Jo to tailor your rehabilitation to your everyday environment. Whether you are in a period of relapse or looking to maintain and build on your current function, Jo is here to support you every step of the way.

FAQs
Your Questions Answered
Finding the right physiotherapist can feel like a big decision. Here are some answers to the questions Jo gets asked most often.
Yes. Specialist physiotherapy can play a significant role in helping people living with MS to manage their symptoms and maintain their function and independence. Regular, targeted exercise and rehabilitation can help to improve strength, balance, coordination and mobility, as well as supporting fatigue management and reducing the impact of MS on everyday life. While physiotherapy cannot cure MS, it can make a real and meaningful difference to quality of life.
Jo will always work with you in a way that is appropriate for how you are feeling. During a relapse, the focus of your sessions may shift towards gentler, more supportive treatment aimed at managing symptoms and maintaining function, rather than more intensive rehabilitation. Jo will always listen to how you are feeling and adapt your sessions accordingly, making sure your rehabilitation is always safe and appropriate for your current condition.
It is never too late to benefit from specialist physiotherapy. Jo works with people living with MS at every stage of the condition, from those who are newly diagnosed to those who have been living with MS for many years. Whatever stage you are at, Jo can assess your current situation, identify areas where physiotherapy can help and work with you to set meaningful goals and make real progress.
Fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of MS, and Jo takes it very seriously in her approach to rehabilitation. Jo will always take your fatigue levels into account when planning and delivering your sessions, making sure your rehabilitation is challenging enough to make a difference without leaving you exhausted. She will also work with you on fatigue management strategies to help you get the most out of your energy in everyday life.
Absolutely. Jo is happy to liaise with your MS nurse, neurologist or other healthcare providers where appropriate, to make sure your rehabilitation is consistent with your wider care and treatment. If you are already receiving other forms of support or treatment, Jo will take this fully into account when putting together your rehabilitation programme.
Yes. Jo understands that MS is a progressive condition and that your needs and goals may change over time. Your rehabilitation programme will be reviewed and updated regularly to make sure it continues to reflect your current situation, your symptoms and your goals. Jo takes a long term view of rehabilitation, always focused on helping you to maintain the best possible quality of life as your condition evolves.
