Understanding stroke rehabilitation
What is stroke rehabilitation?
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to become damaged or die. This can affect movement, balance, coordination, speech and many other functions depending on which part of the brain is affected.
Stroke rehabilitation is the process of relearning skills and rebuilding function following a stroke. The brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and form new connections, a process known as neuroplasticity. With the right support and the right exercises, many people are able to make significant improvements in their movement and independence, even long after their stroke.
Specialist neurological physiotherapy plays a vital role in this process. Through tailored assessment and targeted rehabilitation, a specialist physiotherapist can help you regain movement, improve your balance and coordination, reduce the risk of falls and work towards the goals that matter most to you.
Recovery from stroke is not always a straight line, and progress can look different for everyone. What matters most is having the right person by your side, helping you to keep moving forward.
How Jo can help
Specialist stroke rehabilitation tailored entirely to you
Jo has extensive experience working with stroke patients at every stage of recovery, from the early stages following a stroke right through to longer term rehabilitation. Whether you are newly discharged from hospital or have been living with the effects of a stroke for some time, Jo can assess where you are now and work with you to make meaningful progress.
Jo uses a range of specialist techniques and approaches in her work with stroke patients, including the Bobath concept, a highly respected approach to neurological rehabilitation that focuses on facilitating normal movement patterns and optimising functional outcomes.
Every rehabilitation programme Jo creates is built entirely around the individual. Jo takes time to understand your specific challenges, your lifestyle and your goals, whether that is improving your walking, regaining the use of your arm, reducing your risk of falls or simply feeling more confident and independent in your day to day life.
All sessions take place in the comfort of your own home, across Sheffield and South Yorkshire, meaning your rehabilitation is always carried out in the environment that matters most to your everyday life.

FAQs
Your Questions Answered
Finding the right physiotherapist can feel like a big decision. Here are some answers to the questions Jo gets asked most often.
It is never too late to benefit from specialist stroke rehabilitation. While the most rapid recovery often occurs in the weeks and months immediately following a stroke, the brain retains its ability to adapt and form new connections long after. Jo works with stroke patients at every stage of recovery, including those who are many years on from their stroke.
Jo is able to work with stroke patients at any stage of recovery. If you have recently been discharged from hospital, Jo can pick up where your inpatient rehabilitation left off and help you continue to make progress at home. If you have been living with the effects of a stroke for some time, Jo can assess your current situation and work with you to set new goals and make further improvements.
Goals are entirely personal and will be different for everyone. Some people want to improve their walking or regain the use of their arm. Others want to reduce their risk of falls, improve their balance or feel more confident and independent in their everyday life. Jo will work with you to identify the goals that matter most to you and build your rehabilitation programme around them.
Absolutely. Jo understands that stroke recovery affects the whole family, not just the stroke patient. Jo is happy to involve family members and carers in sessions where appropriate, providing guidance and support to help them feel confident in supporting your recovery at home.
Every stroke and every recovery is different, so it is difficult to give a definitive answer. The length of your rehabilitation will depend on a number of factors, including the nature and severity of your stroke, your current level of function and the goals you want to achieve. Jo will discuss this with you following your initial assessment and will review your progress regularly to make sure your plan continues to work for you.
Not at all. Jo works with stroke patients at every stage of recovery, from those who have recently been discharged from hospital to those who are years on from their stroke and looking to make further progress. It is never too late to benefit from specialist neurological physiotherapy and Jo is always happy to have a conversation about how she can help, whatever stage of your recovery you are at.
